Benzino was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to a mother in Cape Verde and a father in Puerto Rico. Benzino, in addition to his longtime friend David Maze, is known as the editor of The Source, a hip-hop magazine published as a one-page newsletter at Harvard’s Maze House in 1988. He was the co-founder of the magazine in 1994 and remained in the company until 2005. During his tenure, he used the publication as a press tool for the rap group RSO to which he belonged. He reportedly threatened magazine employees to write favorable reviews of the band and its music for almost every issue up to 2000. That same year, Benzino began a feud with rapper Eminem. Sources also began to lose valuable advertisers, and eventually the publication went bankrupt in 2005.
